The story

Mud Pie was founded in 1988 by Marcia Miller, an Atlanta native and University of Georgia journalism graduate who had previously co-founded the first female-owned rep firm in the Southeast. She bought out her partner that year and started a small ceramics gift company — ten licensed terracotta figurines and a one-page catalog printed at a local photo store.

Nearly four decades later, Mud Pie employs more than 200 people in Atlanta and designs and distributes thousands of new products each season. The company remains privately owned and family-operated. Miller continues as CEO; her husband Mark and their children hold leadership positions across the business.

What they make

The catalog spans three divisions. Home covers tabletop, décor, kitchen accessories, seasonal and holiday product, and the gift-shop staples — frames, mugs, signs, candles, ceramics. Kids covers infant and toddler apparel, plush, and gift items, including the embroidered baby gifts the brand has long been known for. Women covers fashion accessories, jewelry, and lifestyle pieces.

Across all three, the design language is consistent — warm, trend-aware, optimistic, with a clear focus on giftability. The catalog is broad enough that a small shop can carry just one or two categories and still feel coherent, and large stores can build entire departments around the brand.

How they sell

Mud Pie's primary channel is independent specialty retailers — gift shops, boutiques, baby and children's stores, bookstore sidelines, and resort retail. The company has a long-running sales partnership with OneCoast, one of the largest rep groups in the gift industry, and additionally maintains a network of territory sales managers. Buyers can locate the rep covering their zip code through Mud Pie's online rep finder.

The brand operates a flagship showroom at AmericasMart in Atlanta, relocating in January 2026 to Building 2, Floor 18, Suite 1821 after nearly a decade on Floor 6. Mud Pie also exhibits at Las Vegas Market, Dallas Total Home & Gift, and other major shows. Wholesale opening orders begin at $750 with reorders at $250; net terms are available after credit approval.

The company also sells direct to consumers at mudpie.com, but the wholesale channel remains the core of the business.

Why they're worth knowing

For an independent retailer, Mud Pie functions as a workhorse vendor — a brand whose product moves consistently across multiple gift-giving occasions (baby shower, wedding, hostess gift, holiday) without requiring a buyer to chase trends. The breadth and depth of the catalog make it possible to build a meaningful presence in a single store with one rep relationship.

Industry recognition has been substantial. The company has been a seven-time finalist for Manufacturer of the Year at the Retailer Excellence Awards, has earned the gift industry's ICON Honors, and has appeared on the INC 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies.
