The story

Livia Cowan started Mariposa as a teenager helping her sister source unusual product for a retail store, traveling to Mexico in a van and returning with truckloads of glassware made from recycled Coke bottles. When her sister moved on, Cowan took over the business, eventually moving it from her parents' garage in Gloucester (the family used to drive merchandise to Gloucester High School in friends' pickup trucks to meet semi-trailers shipping to Neiman Marcus) to its current home in a converted 1800s livery barn in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts.

Mariposa was a sustainability-first brand long before sustainability was a marketing category. Cowan deliberately downplayed the recycled-materials origins of her products in the early years, sensing that consumers found it off-putting. Once consumer attitudes shifted, the manufacturing story became central to the brand's positioning.

What they make

The catalog is anchored by sand-cast aluminum — serving trays, platters, bowls, cake pedestals, ice buckets, and the engravable wedding-and-anniversary gifts that make up a meaningful share of the business. The String of Pearls and Signature collections are the brand's most recognizable, with pearl-edged or polished-rim aluminum platters that Mariposa retailers can engrave on demand.

Beyond aluminum, the line includes recycled-glass barware, ceramic tableware, and selected Italian glassware imports. Coastal and entertaining themes — oysters, scallops, seahorses, golf flags, wheelbarrows, footballs — recur across the catalog. New collections are added each season; the catalog rotates to keep the assortment fresh.

How they sell

Distribution is wholesale through 400+ specialty retailers, plus larger accounts including Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. Mariposa runs a Key Dealer program that gives qualifying retailers free shipping, hosting privileges for in-store engraving events, and direct marketing support. The retailer-facing site (mariposa-wholesale.com) handles trade ordering separately from the consumer site.

The brand also operates Mariposa & Friends, a retail concept store carrying Mariposa alongside curated luxury gifting brands — a useful intelligence channel back to the wholesale team about how the line merchandises against partners like Vietri, Mon Ami, and Rifle Paper Co.

Why they're worth knowing

For specialty gift retailers, Mariposa fills a specific position: the wedding and anniversary engravable category, at a price point above costume metalware but below sterling. The combination of polished aluminum, sustainability story, and on-site engraving support gives the line a clear merchandising story that closes wedding-registry sales reliably. The 100% recycled materials origin is genuine differentiation against imported knockoffs.

The brand has built deep roots in the bridal and corporate-gifting markets specifically. For a retailer with a registry program, Mariposa is one of the more dependable sources of mid-tier giftable serving pieces, particularly in coastal and resort markets where the nautical-themed pieces sell year-round.
